Kol Rina, the Jewish a cappella group announces the release of its first album,
"Ashira".
The group, the only Jewish mixed a cappella choir in the UK was started by a
few enthusiasts in 1996 in Cambridge and has grown to 9 men and women aged between
25 and 38 from a variety of Jewish backgrounds.
A grant from the European Association of Jewish Culture (EAJC) specifically
to promote the recording of an original musical work has enabled Kol Rina to
produce a CD of 14 tracks which are completely diverse in style, ranging from
the funky to the contemplative and beautiful. What they all have in common is
the lack of any musical instruments - this is a truly "unplugged"
album.
Kol Rina's unique sound hangs on a repertoire consisting mostly of original
compositions written by group members. The name is Hebrew for "Voice of
Joy" - chosen because the group sing and create music to share with others
for enjoyment. They give recitals at local Jewish Care homes, fund-raising concerts
for various charities and free performances and workshops.
2002 saw the group's first major concert which was a sell-out. The successful year concluded with performances at the Spirit Matters Conference, Yom Masorti and Limmud Conference. Kol Rina were also featured on Shalom FM in January 2003.
Juliet Simmons, Limmud Conference Chair 2002 said of the group: "Kol Rina
more than held their own in an international field and demonstrate that the
UK can produce performers that are as good as the best from around the world."
The new CD draws on varied sources for inspiration and features traditional,
classical Chasidic, gospel as well as minimalist and popular musical influences.
Staying true to their roots, Kol Rina sing predominantly in Hebrew as many of
the lyrics are from the liturgy.
The CD will be officially launched at Lauderdale House, Waterlow Park, Highgate
Hill on 15 June 2003. The evening will begin at 7.30pm and will include a performance
of highlights from the album. For more information about the launch event visit
